Anxiety disorders are basically caused by two factors a presence of some type of fear and the attempts to escape or control the uncomfortable sensations and thoughts.  

We specialize in varying types of anxiety such as social anxiety, phobias and generalized anxiety which all have similar features of avoidance of the fear situation.  Some of the symptoms of anxiety are:

  • Having difficulty controlling worry
  • Irritability
  • heart palpitation
  • muscle tension
  • stomach pain
  • pain or tightness in chest
  • sense of impending doom
  • sleep problems
  • avoiding things that trigger anxiety

Causes

About 1 in 3 Americans will suffer from an anxiety disorder at some time during their lives, however, the exact causes of anxiety disorders are not understood.  There can be a variety of contributing factors for why you may have an anxiety disorder, some of the most common causes are:

Genetics: Your family mental health history may predispose or increase your chances of having an anxiety disorder but that does not mean that you will automatically develop anxiety.

Personality traits: who you are and how you perceive the world around you can be a contributing factor to anxiety.  Personality traits that are more likely to lead to anxiety can be lower self-esteem, shy or timid, perfectionist and a desire for control.

Trauma or Stressful life event: Having major emotional shock or trauma as well as stressful life events can lead to anxiety.

Treatment:

Our treatment for anxiety is extremely effective and has a high rate of success. We utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and can combine other modalities, such as virtual reality therapy and neurofeedback,depending on the type and severity of the anxiety.
