Causes

There are a variety of possible causes for depression, such as, a combination of environmental, genetic predisposition, hormonal imbalance or psychological factors. Sometimes depression can occur during periods of instability that may include stressful life changes, such as, divorce, grief, giving birth, or migration.

What are the signs of depression?

There are persistent feelings of sadness or loss of interest that characterize depression.  These may include:

  • Changes in sleep
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Weight gain or weight loss
  • Fatigue or loss of energy
  • Recurring thoughts of death or suicide
  • A feeling of restlessness or being slowed down
  • Indecisiveness
